Boca vs River
Boca Juniors return to the Copa Libertadores’ finals after six years following their 2-2 away draw at Palmeiras thanks to goals from Ramon Abila and Dario Benedetto to make it 4-2 on aggregate. A week ago, they managed to beat Tigre 4-1 at home with an alternative XI, which allowed Boca to reach 18 points in the league table, eight behind leaders Racing Club. El Xeneize suffered a single defeat in their last eight competitive matches (three wins, four draws), at Gimnasia LP 2-1. At home, Boca won nine of their last 11 encounters, but their only loss was in that spell to River Plate 2-0 in September.
Meanwhile, River Plate advanced to the finals in a dramatic way. They beat defending champions Gremio 2-1 away, scoring twice during the last ten minutes (through Rafael Borre and Gonzalo Martinez) to take advantage of the away goals rule. Last Saturday, coach Marcelo Gallardo rotated his players and the side lost at Quilmes 1-0 to Estudiantes. That means the team have slid out of the Copa Sudamericana spots, accumulating 16 points with a game in hand. River are unbeaten on away turf in the Libertadores 2018, having claimed three victories and three draws so far.
This is a final and also a derby, so it’s very hard to predict but Boca playing at home has no choice but to go and try to take the win whatever it takes. They’ve scored in all knockout stages games (13 goals in 6 games) plus in 6 of the last 8 league games so 2 goals is definitely possible and I have to go with the low totals line.
